What is the best way to hire freelance writers?

Question by Custom: What is the best way to hire freelance writers?
I own a small ezine about parenting.

I’m having trouble finding quality freelance writers. I’ve mainly used Craigslist, but need a better option. I’m getting a lot of submissions I am not proud of, horrible spelling and grammar(which is why I don’t write more myself), not 1 has met a deadline.

Any ideas?

Grab a copy of Writer’s Digest and start looking at the ads.
These are pro companies that have pro writers.
Not necessarily good ones, mind you, so screen them, but writers who expect to write,
not college and high school guys who dream of being writers but can never meet a deadline.

It looks like ASJA (American Society of Journalists and Authors) can hook you up with potential writers. The site claims this service to search is free.

Find sites that steal people hard work. Many do, but think it’s okay because they’re linking the hard work back to the original sites. Then click on the link to the original sites, click on the author and e-mail him or her. (And, if you want to prove your noble intentions, let them know their hard work has been stolen and who stole it.)

You could hire me!

I’ve been a full-time freelance writer (aka online media journalist) for more than three years now, and in that time I’ve seen it all. Unfortunately, the integrity of this profession takes hard hits from those who only play at it. By play at it I mean: miss deadlines, submit inferior work, promise and don’t deliver, and so on.

There are, however, quite a few of us out there who do value our work and our relationship with clients, but Craigslist is rarely the way to find quality writers.

I don’t want this to sound like a sales pitch but I could certainly help you out – or I could send you the names of other quality writers or places where you might find them. Feel free to email me at writerjenn1 AT gmail DOT com

Good luck!
